Protecting our Public Lands in California from New Oil Drilling - Submitting our Comments in Real Time

Climate Health Now has continuously opposed new oil and gas drilling in California – in the interest of protecting health from the local air pollution of fossil fuels and from the global health harms of climate change – since its founding. However, the fight continues.

In July 2025, The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced its intention to review the land management plans for >1,000,000 acres of public lands from the San Joaquin Valley all the way up the Central Coast to the San Francisco Bay, by preparing new environmental reviews that could pave the way for new oil and gas drilling on BLM lands. The effort aligns with Secretary’s Order 3418, which supports Trump’s call for “Unleashing American Energy,” aimed at increasing energy exploration and production on federal lands. The order emphasizes development of oil, gas, coal, strategic minerals, and alternative energy sources on public lands. More oil drilling would be devastating for our public lands, harming wildlife, contaminating waterways, harming businesses, and communities’ health, all while reversing our efforts to slow climate change.

At this meeting we will plan on submitting our comments on the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement and will discuss next steps in our campaign.
