What we’re doing: We are recruiting county leads from each of the 16 impacted counties (right). Leads will be supported to help activate community members in their region. Interested in becoming a lead? Please email connect@climatehealthnow.org for more information.
Background: Climate Health Now (CHN) has continuously opposed new oil and gas drilling in California – in the interest of protecting health from the local air pollution of fossil fuels and from the global health harms of climate change – since its founding. However, the fight continues.
In July 2025, The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced its intention to review the land management plans for more than 1 million acres of public lands from the San Joaquin Valley all the way up the Central Coast to the San Francisco Bay, by preparing new environmental reviews that could pave the way for new oil and gas drilling on BLM lands. The effort aligns with Secretary’s Order 3418, which supports Trump’s call for “Unleashing American Energy,” aimed at increasing energy exploration and production on federal lands. The order emphasizes development of oil, gas, coal, strategic minerals, and alternative energy resources on public lands.
When BLM releases its draft proposed supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) (which could be any day now that the Shutdown has concluded), there will be another 30-day comment period, and likely an in-person meeting at the BLM offices. In a time where the effects of climate change grow ever more extreme, CHN will continue engaging on this issue to oppose such a devastating decision.
